Research from the Rodale Institute demonstrates that if organic, regenerative agriculture was adopted globally, climate change could be reversed. To show how powerful regenerative, organic agriculture could be as a climate change solution, the Institute created a global model based on 100 percent transition to this type of agriculture. Using emission rates from 2012, they found that the world’s farmlands could have sequestered 111 percent emissions that year.
OCal is a statewide certification program in California that sets and upholds standards for cannabis cultivation and production that are comparable to organic standards. The program ensures that any cannabis product bearing the OCal seal has been certified according to consistent, uniform guidelines modeled after those of the National Organic Program (NOP).
Why is it called “comparable-to-organic” cannabis?
By law, the California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA) was tasked with creating a certification program for cannabis that mirrors the National Organic Program and the California Organic Food and Farming Act. However, the term “organic” is federally regulated and can only be used by products officially certified under the USDA’s National Organic Program.
Because cannabis remains illegal at the federal level, it cannot legally be labeled as “organic.” As a result, California uses the term “comparable-to-organic” to reflect the program’s alignment with organic principles, without violating federal regulations.
